Los Angeles Cultural Theatre Values… |
|
|
At the
Los Angeles Cultural Theatre, theatre arts professionals work
side-by-side with enthusiastic and motivated artists to create exciting
productions. Each stage-play
employs a great deal of attention and in some cases participation from the
audience. Through
this close collaboration, artists not only develop their talents, but also
learn to work as part of a team. -Sidney Muldrow |

Our History… |
|
The
Los Angeles Cultural Theatre was founded in 1988 by Sidney Muldrow, then a budding artist
with aspirations of changing the industry. The Los Angeles Cultural Theatre’s
company operated from a small garage, renting rehearsal space as needed. In 1989, Los
Angeles Cultural Theatre began renting a larger space in downtown and was
able to expand its programs to include community classes, a lunch performance
series and an informal season of new plays. The following year Spence Williams
took over as the Artistic Director and formed a seven-member company of
actors, designers, and playwrights entitled Sidney’s Seven. In
addition to fulfilling general administrative duties, this group produced a main
stage season of experimental plays and alternative interpretations of
classics (three each year), continued the lunch series, and developed new
plays for the children's touring theater. The
Theatre began to have a significant impact on the community by its second
year by forming this unique company of artists/administrators. Over the
next several years Los Angeles Cultural Theatre became more
financially sound and developed a reputation for its commitment to
experimental works including not just plays, but also multi-media and
performance art pieces. Los
Angeles Cultural Theatre embraced the diverse range of artists living and working in Redondo
Beach involving actors, playwrights, and directors in addition to visual
artists, dancers, and musicians. This synthesis was realized in the main stage
season as well as in the children's programming. Los Angeles Cultural
Theatre thus began its existence as a theatre arts center. |

Where our support came from… |
|
Los
Angeles Cultural Theatre received foundation support to hire additional part-time
administrative staff to market and develop the children's theater and lunch
series. Soon the rapid growth and expansion of Los Angeles Cultural
Theatre programs demanded a larger space. In the Fall of 1992, Los
Angeles Cultural Theatre joined forces with The Underground Dance
Theatre to find a location for local organizations in downtown Redondo
Beach. Over the
next year, the local organizations held capital campaigns to find and
renovate a new space. In December of 1993, Los Angeles Cultural Theatre
moved into its current location. The improved facilities for Los Angeles
Cultural Theatre included a ground floor, fully handicapped-accessible, professional
lighting and sound equipment; a second floor space used as a classroom and
rehearsal space; an office for the administrative staff; and a large storeroom
which serves as a green room, storage space for sets, costumes, and props,
and a workshop. |
|
How our budgeting stacks up… |
|
Each year
Los Angeles Cultural Theatre has increased its operating budget;
number of staff members; and community, foundation, government, and corporate
support base. Over the past seventeen years, under the direction of Sidney
Muldrow, the annual budget has grown each fiscal year. Support
from organizations is also increasing: in FY 2004, Los Angeles Cultural
Theatre received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and its
first grant from the Shubert Foundation. In
addition to engaging seventy-five to one hundred independent contractors each
year, Los Angeles Cultural Theatre currently has a staff of seventeen.
Independent contractors include teachers, actors, directors, designers,
choreographers, writers, composers, musicians, and technicians. |
